    Take Wings Foundation

Representatives from the Take Wings Foundation join us to discuss their current issues and projects including their upcoming Angel Awards Benefit.

Take Wings Foundation (TWF) was founded in 1997 by award winning actress Terri J. Vaughn. Ms. Vaughn, who is a product of one of the Bay Area’s most notorious inner city neighborhoods, has first hand knowledge of the challenges and choices that teenaged girls are faced with on a daily basis. As a result of this first hand knowledge, her own personal success and a desire to give back to her community, Take Wings Foundation was born. Ms. Vaughn was driven to develop an organization that would specifically address the needs of the young women living in Hunters Point and similar communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. TWF provides opportunities for girls to interact with positive role models, get them involved in community service projects, encourages personal growth and development, and provides a series of workshops geared towards developing positive self esteem.

Every year in August, Take Wings holds a Annual Angels Awards Benefit to raise funds for TWF programs and scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to all graduating girls that complete all phases of the program (workshop attendance, journaling, essay writing, and community service) and are going on to college to further their education. Also, past participates who are in college may apply once a year for the TWF scholarship until they graduate from college.

A.G. Kawamura, CA Secretary of Agriculture

CA Secretary of Agriculture, A.G. Kawamura join us to discuss his current projects and issues including the plan for the Light Brown Apple Moth.

The US Department of Agriculture describes the Light Brown Apple Moth in the following:

The light brown apple moth (LBAM), Epiphyas postvittana (Tortricidae), is a native pest of Australia and is now widely distributed New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Caledonia. Although it was reported in Hawaii in the late 1800s, a recent LBAM detection in California is the first on the United States mainland. USDA confirmed the detection of LBAM in Alameda County, California on March 22, 2007. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) aggressively surveyed the area to discover the extent to the infestation and identified the pest in 11 additional counties.

LBAM is of particular concern because it can damage a wide range of crops and other plants including California’s prized cypress as well as redwoods, oaks and many other varieties commonly found in California’s urban and suburban landscaping, public parks and natural environment. The list of agricultural crops that could be damaged by this pest includes grapes, citrus, stone fruit (peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries, apricots) and many others. The complete “host list” contains well over 1,000 plant species and more than 250 fruits and vegetables.

    Asian Pacific Fund

Representatives from the Asian Pacific Fund join us to discuss their current projects and issues including Growing Up Asian in America Program.

The Asian Pacific Fund selects a new theme for the Growing Up Asian in America contest every year, and with the Beijing Summer Olympics coming up, they ask students to share their ideas on winning and losing. Young people today are very aware of global competition, and it is a widely-held stereotype that Asian parents in particular expect their children to excel in school. They would like people to know how common this expectation for excellence actually is. How does competition and teamwork fit into students' drive to succeed? Does this change if students are involved in academics, sports, music or other arenas?

The objective of the Asian Pacific Fund is to improve the health and well-being of all Asian Americans in the Bay Area.

    Arielle Jacobs, High School Musical

Actress, Arielle Jacobs, joins us to discuss her current project including her upcoming performances in The American Musical Theater of San Jose’s production of Disney’s High School Musical play.

Growing up in Half Moon Bay aspiring actress, Arielle Jacobs performed in musicals and she dreamed of life in lights on stage and now she is living her dream as Gabriella Montez in the National Tour of High School Musical.

Disney’s High School Musical is a contemporary musical comedy about a popular high school basketball star and a shy, academically gifted newcomer who discover they share a secret passion for singing. When they sign up together to audition for the lead roles in the school musical, it threatens East High's rigid social order and sends their peers into an uproar. In a desperate effort to maintain the status quo, the "jocks," the "brainiacs" and even the drama club regulars are soon hatching convoluted plots to separate the pair and keep them offstage. By defying expectations and taking a chance on their dreams, however, the couple inspires other students to go public with some surprising hidden talents of their own.
